If you are a seasonal decorator like me, than I'm sure you know, keeping seasonal decor organized can be a challenge, but with the right system in place, it can be a functional solution that brings joy back to getting out all that fun stuff. One of the most asked questions on my youtube channel, season after season, is: How to store seasonal home decor .
I consider myself a maximalist home decorator with it comes to holidays and celebrations and with that comes quite a bit of decor.
In my latest YouTube video, I share how I store all of my seasonal decor items in my garage (and still fit two cars in there). I use a bin system that has worked for me for over a decade, and I am sharing all my best tips with you in this video.
To give you a guide here on the blog today, I've shared some tipsb and solution below that can definitely help you achieve a clutter-free and efficient storage system too.
How to Store Seasonal Home Decor - Choose your bins wisely
I use all white bins, because I love a clean, streamlined look, and since the garage is a space that I frequent daily, it's important to me to have something that is both functional AND visually appealing.
Other great bin options to consider are color coded by season. For example, perhaps you do all green bins for Christmas, Red for Valentines Day, Pink for Spring, Yellow for Summer, Blue for the 4th of July, Orange for fall, Black for Halloween, etc.
Some people prefer clear bins so they can see what's in each one more easily. I think this is a great solution for some. I just don't choose to do this because I don't want to see all the "stuff" inside on a daily basis since it's stored in my garage.
2. Don't Forget to Label Everything!
When it comes to storing holiday decor, labeling each bin clearly with the season or holiday it contains is key. This will save you time and frustration when you're looking for specific items. I actually use a note card on the top of each bin to label what's inside (a bit anteqated for the technology of today - but what can I say, I'm old school,) However, there are great apps today that allow you to use a scanning system and digital lists to catagorize all the contents of each of your bins. Pretty cool!
3. Utilize STURDY shelving
I repeat: STURDY shelving.
We often don't realize how heavy all those beautiful seasonal keepsakes and decorative pieces can be, and it really is the best way to store seasonal decor. It's important to have a shelving unit that can hold anything and everything you need to put on it. Investing in sturdy shelving units is crucial for maximizing storage space in your garage. Opt for shelves that can support the weight of your bins and are adjustable to accommodate bins of different sizes. By keeping your bins off the floor and on shelves, you’ll create a more organized and accessible storage area.
This is my absolute favorite storage shelving, and the exact one that I have in my garage. They are easy to put together, and they can hold just about anything. So you don't have to worry about your treasures while they sit on the selves in the off season.
4. Group Similar Items Together
When organizing your seasonal decor, I always group similar items together in my space. For example, I keep all Christmas decorations in one section, Halloween items in another, and so on. This method not only keeps your decor organized but also makes it easier to decorate when the season arrives. You’ll know exactly where to find everything, and putting things away will be easier too, because everything already has a place.
